John Nicolson
John Nicolson is a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and a Chartered Arbitrator with over 30 years in the construction industry.
John chartered with the RICS in 1984 and became a Fellow of the RICS in 1996 and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators 2006.
He has a master’s law degree in construction law from Strathclyde University and a postgraduate certificate with distinction in construction law and arbitration from The Robert Gordon University.
John is a practising Arbitrator and Adjudicator. Sits on the Chartered Institution of Arbitrators Panel of Arbitrators and the Adjudicator Panels of Scottish Building, Institute of Civil Engineers, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Scotland & Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors/Federation of Master Builders UK.
An experienced Chartered Quantity Surveyor, John has a strong background in main contracting and sub-contracting within a building, civil, structural, rail, utilities, mechanical, petrochemical and M&E environments. With extensive claims experience in construction, engineering and manufacturing John represents parties in pursuing and defending claims in adjudication and arbitrations while also acting on behalf of parties in mediations.
Providing expert witness reports on quantum and programming issues John works extensively throughout Scotland and England. He has also concluded major disputes in Gibraltar, Spain, Mainland Europe and the Middle East on such contracts as JCT, ICE, NEC 3, GC/Works, Institute of Chemical Engineers, FIDIC etc. on matters such as:
- Extension of time / Prolongation claims
- Determination / Repudiation
- Uneconomical working / Disruption
- Measurement issues
- Insurance issues
- Design responsibility
- Contract formation
- Final accounts
